Down and Out:
Depression and Pain

Current medical studies dealing with depression have found a link between depression and pain. This is a relief to many people who are experiencing both problems. With the recognition of the connection you can take steps to relieve both the pain and the depression.

Depression and Pain

Clinical depression is recognized as a major depression lasting more than two weeks during which the depressed person will notice a change in eating habits, sleep patterns, feelings of guilt, low self-esteem, and thoughts of death and suicide. It is this form of depression that has been linked to chronic pain.

The recent studies have determined that people with chronic back pain are four times as likely to also be clinically depressed. This is a significant number, large enough for the medical community to sit up and take notice.

I Knew it All Along

It has been very frustrating for people with depression and severe pain to receive treatment for one and not the other. In the past it was sometimes thought that a depressed person just complained or that a person with chronic back pain might be a little down in spirits. If you were one of these people you will hopefully feel vindicated with the new information emerging.

A Pain in My Back

Back pain and depression is thought to be the most common pairing of depression and pain. If you have chronic back pain you may have trouble sleeping and limited mobility. A loss of sleep will lead to exhaustion and limited mobility can cause a person to isolate themselves because of what they cannot do anymore. These factors can lead to clinical depression. You may begin to see life as hopeless as your life becomes controlled by your pain.

Get Over It!

If you suffer depression and pain you have probably been told to “get over it”. This is an extremely frustrating reaction and can lead to deeper depression. Fortunately, the link between back pain and depression will allow you to treat all the symptoms.

For clinical depression there is nothing better than a good old apple. Apples contain vitamin B, phosphorus, and potassium that help to revive your nervous system. Also recommended is lemon balm, an herb known to improve your overall mood and help with fatigue. To prepare the infusion you should add one teaspoon of lemon balm to one cup of cold water and let the mixture steep overnight. The next day you can drink small doses every hour or so to raise your spirits.

Natural pain relief is accomplished with diet, exercise, and herbal remedies. The most well received herbal remedy for pain is Rhus tox. Exercises to relieve pain include gentle, no impact exercises such as swimming and stretching.

It a huge comfort to know the link between depression and pain has finally been acknowledged and that there are natural cures for all of your symptoms.
